Associate Interpretive Content Specialist

Job Summary

The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks an Associate Interpretive Content Specialist to support our ambitious display and exhibition program. This permanent position within the division of Education, Public Programs, and Interpretive Content will serve a pivotal role crafting our interpretation from draft to public presentation. Directly supporting our mission to “inspire curiosity about, and enjoyment and understanding of, the visual arts,” you will shape our content narrative, strategy, and language for audience and platform needs through thoughtful writing, editing, and communication.

Collaborating across Curatorial, Exhibitions, Design, Interpretive Content, and other departments, the Associate Interpretive Content Specialist is a central part of the content development for both permanent collection displays and exhibitions. You will serve as a key editorial authority over public-facing didactic and interpretive texts. You will bring to bear our collective passion, knowledge, and research to develop inventive content that engages diverse audiences both in-gallery and off-site.

With the project team, you will review the hierarchy, structure, and content of interpretive materials in relation to the exhibition/installation interpretive goals, audience needs, and Getty accepted guidelines. You will recommend or execute changes to wording, sequencing, and design; you will identify strategies and tools to advance interpretive goals; and you may advise or spearhead didactic sections of exhibitions or other content platforms.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Performs all editorial functions for didactic and interpretive texts on a variety of topics and with different levels of complexity.
  • As a core member of our team, collaborates with curators and other stakeholders to develop the exhibition or installation narrative and interpretive structure.
  • Works with subject matter experts to refine the content of the exhibition, identifying and challenging the significance of the narrative, objects, and contextual information.
  • Participates in the writing, developmental editing, and proofing of exhibition text, didactic graphics, and media. Works with authors to craft gallery and promotional text for clarity, accuracy, and audience.
  • Ensures stylistic and content consistency across platforms and media, and that Getty stylistic rules and quality standards are maintained regardless of author.
  • Ensures that text and visual presentations clearly communicate agreed-upon project narratives to the intended audience(s) and meet established goals.
  • Advocates for the audience(s); strives to create a positive, inclusive experience for all.
  • Recommends content strategies to target specific key audiences as defined in the content brief.
  • May manage outside editors or proofreaders.
  • Assists with the development of the project brief along with curators, experts, and other team members to identify key messages and objects, text and didactic panels, as well as scope for digital media.


  • Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree in museum education, art education, art history, or closely related field strongly preferred
  • 3‐5 years of relevant art museum or educational experience
  • Foreign language skills preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Editorial experience in a museum preferred
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Ability to effectively advocate for inclusivity and diverse audiences
  • Experience shaping scholarly or technical material to be engaging and accessible to non-specialist audiences
  • Intimate familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Ability to edit electronically in Microsoft Word and Adobe InDesign
  • Knowledge of discipline-specific museum and art education practice
  • Ability to set priorities, monitor multiple overlapping schedules, and juggle challenging demands in a dynamic workflow
  • Demonstrates tact, diplomacy, teamwork, and the ability to collaborate with a wide range of project participants in a positive environment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically and use new technologies to expand outreach and program impact
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Familiarity with art history and the collecting areas of the J. Paul Getty Museum (Antiquities, Drawings, European Decorative Arts and Sculpture, European Paintings, Manuscripts, Photography)
