AUDIO VISUAL SERVICES SUPERVISOR; The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis




The Audio Visual Services Supervisor is responsible for leading the team that maintains the exhibit, experience, and gallery technology and support needs of The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. The supervisor oversees and engages in the planning, implementation, operation, and tear down of intermediate to advanced audiovisual, audio, computer, video, lighting and projection equipment. The incumbent supervises the Audio Visual (AV) staff and volunteers, coordinates the team’s schedules, equipment inventory, technical and maintenance support for all museum AV systems, as well as maintaining internal and external customer relations.


  1. Performs as the project manager for new gallery technology projects, collaborating with internal partners, conducting appropriate research, analysis, testing and roll out of new technologies.


  1. Coordinates with colleagues in Experience Development on new galleries. Ensures that all A/V technology equipment is researched, approved and purchased within budget prior to production.


  1. Provides direction, mentorship and leadership in the development and advancement of direct reports. Identifies, selects, supervisors and mentors the AV technician staff and interns. Coordinates staff schedules for before and after-hours event setups and AV equipment as necessary.


  1. Coordinates and communicates all AV technician work through the IIT Help Ticketing system for ongoing communication with internal customers.


  1. At the direction of the Director of Infrastructure Technology, provides hardware and software support for internal client PCs, associated software and peripherals, including research, purchasing, installation, and troubleshooting.


  1. Coordinates vendor and third-party repairs of gallery, PCs and associated peripherals. Assists team with proper security, storage, transportation and maintenance of equipment. Accountable for all equipment inventories before and after each event


  1. Schedules and maintains a calendar of set up requests and scheduled maintenance or gallery installations to avoid conflicts. Provides support via the phone and in person at the client location.


  1. Provides exceptional customer service with visitors, staff, volunteers, contractors and vendors. Performs gallery technology startup / shutdown / repair / maintenance.


  1. Creates and maintains relationships with outside industrial technology developers.


  1. Utilizes existing systems and maintains accurate records of repairs, maintenance, equipment usage and supply usage.


  1. Remain abreast of best practice in learning environment design and technology through research and professional conferences.


  1. Five (5) years of audio visual industry experience working for an AV company or in a Media Department in a similar business environment. Bachelor’s degree and CTS preferred.
  2. Two (2) years of direct related experience in PC help desk support, AV support of exhibit technology installation and maintenance, or theatre industry technology.
  3. Three (3) years of supervisory experience, preferably in a technical management capacity.
  4. Demands a high level of attention to detail and the ability to work with and meet strict deadlines.
  5. Ability to effectively work with the diverse and highly skilled team of staff, volunteers and interns.
  6. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings and some holidays.
  7. Must have strong technical skills and the ability to quickly learn and apply new technologies.
  8. Must have knowledge and experience regarding the configuration, assembly, and operation of computer, network, industrial and electrical technologies.
  9. Must have excellent logic, analytical, problem resolution, and communication (both written and verbal) skills.
  10. Requires exemplary organizational skills.


  1. Must be able to view computer monitor, reports, manuals, and observe sound and lighting equipment.
  2. Must be able to communicate extensively and effectively via telephone/TDD, one on one conversations and two-way radio.
  3. Requires extensive use of computer keyboards, various lighting, sound, and control equipment, interactive media and video systems.
  4. Heavy use of power tools, electrical instruments, lift operations and light maintenance.
  5. Must be able to sit, stand, walk, and negotiate stairs for extended periods of time. Must also be able to bend, kneel, climb and reach.
  6. Must be able to safely operate lifts and ladders. Must be able to physically lift 50 pounds.
  7. Must be able to work in confined spaces and heights. Must be able to tolerate dust in the environment.
