Creative Director at Interactive Knowledge

We are looking for a talented, passionate person to join our Interactive Knowledge team. The right candidate will have the opportunity to work with a staff of friendly, organized, highly-skilled professionals who are dedicated to our projects and our clients.  We produce interactive experiences that deliver interesting, useful content in a variety of fields including history, art, education, public policy, social justice and public health. Our clients are nonprofits who choose us because of our outstanding reputation and impressive catalog of previous work. We have a long history of creating interactive websites for a wide variety of museums around the country. We’ve won numerous awards at the Museums and the Web Conference including Best of the Web in 2014 for our redesign of the Reynolda House Museum of American Art. We have also been Webby Award finalists several times and won the Cultural Institutions – People’s Choice Webby in 2011 for our redesign of the Smithsonian Institution’s main website,

This is an outstanding opportunity. We have been in business for nearly twenty-five years and have only had two Creative Directors (well, it took us about eight years to hire the first one).  This position is full time and located in Charlotte, N.C.   • concept, develop and manage a “best in class” creative product while being hands-on with design, content strategy and governance
  • responsible for all project documentation, tracking, organization, and follow-through for internal resources and external clients.
  • manage project, client, creative teams and tracks of work
  • lead and direct the client and the creative team from concept to completion
  • plan and estimate budgets for highly complex projects
  • risk/issue management and resolution
  • apply brand identity systems, typography, photography, color and other ingredients appropriately to create innovative visual solutions that meet client and user needs
  • conceptualize, and design interactive experiences across various digital platforms
  • create visual wireframes, prototypes and/or screens
  • provide quality assurance of all creative deliverables
  • contribute to the development of the creative team’s culture and quality standards
  • collaborate daily with Technology Director
  • delegate day-to-day responsibility to design team members
  • elevate the creative level of the work coming out of the creative team
  • educate other team members, not exclusive to the creative team, through project development and performance management
  • some travel is required

  • solid knowledge of the development cycle for websites and interactive installations: concept, proposal, scheduling, design, development, review, QA and ongoing support
  • working knowledge of CMS content strategy (Drupal preferred but not required)
  • working knowledge of how design translates into code
  • solid knowledge of best practices in interactive usability
  • working knowledge of social media tools and their evolution
