Design and User Experience Manager

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum works to ensure the permanence of Holocaust memory, understanding and relevance to promote a world in which people confront hatred, prevent genocide and promote human dignity.

The Museum Experience and Digital Media division of the Levine Institute for Holocaust Education seeks a Design and UX Manager to provide and enhance iterative thinking, guide user-centered research, and lead digital design while also serving as a practitioner. The ideal candidate will provide the creative and strategic leadership to ensure the Museum continues to possess the digital tools necessary to tell the stories of the Holocaust and other genocides, always with a goal of making the past relevant today and of provoking our visitors to think, question, care and, ultimately, take action.

This is a full-time, donated (or non-Federal) position complete with a full range of benefits. It resides within the Levine Institute for Holocaust Education. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and guide digital solutions. You ensure that design and technical excellence support the audience-facing initiatives of the Museum. You understand the problems Museum colleagues seek to solve, for whom, and partnering with them to identify solutions.
  • Serve as the UX design lead. You lead iterative design thinking and supervise a team that is designing, building and testing concepts to solve problems. You serve as a hands-on practitioner with self-owned projects.
  • Lead a team of UI Developers and UX Designers. You assess digital product plans and guide their implementation at a macro and micro level. You act as sounding board and offer guidance to team of designers, front-end developers and applications developers.
  • Establish uniform digital design practices. You advocate for and drive user-centered design, best practices around code approach, review, and promotion; iterative development (design – build – test); research-based decisions; and the incorporation of usability in all stages of product life-cycle.
  • The right tools for the job. You collaborate with web producers to understand what they need and ensure that they have tools necessary to tell stories on the web in ways that captivate.
  • Drive a culture of user research, design thinking, and iterative design in all Museum experiences. You practice and lead audience-centered design thinking for both digital and physical spaces. This work ranges from leading concept testing for an in-museum exhibit, providing guidance to video producers for testing their work for outcome and impact; collaborating with an exhibitions team to develop an observation or evaluation tool; user testing of web design that include online methods including surveys, card sorting, and tree testing; as well as, of course, in-person usability testing.
  • Measuring performance. You are passionate that experiences launched into the world succeed. You establish criteria for measuring success of the audience experience and you document and share performance metrics and seek to improve past performance.
  • Audience-facing digital experiences. You work with colleagues across the Museum to identify audience-facing digital needs, propose, prioritize and champion solutions.
