Director of Digital Learning and Engagement

Norman Rockwell Museum seeks creative, curious and enthusiastic leader for the Museum’s digital division, an individual with a deep love of learning, who will lead strategy, planning, project management, execution and creation of the museum’s digital footprint. The successful candidate will connect audiences of all ages in the Museum galleries, nationally and globally with digital learning experiences delivered via mobile, internet and in-gallery platforms.

A member of the executive team, reporting to the Director/CEO, the position leads the digital project team which consists of staff from every department and works closely with Museum educators in the creation and dissemination of digital learning tools and experiences created from the Museum’s decade long and ongoing creation of digital collections, now numbering more than 50,000 items, consisting of photographs, video, audio and ephemeral materials related to Norman Rockwell and American illustration art.

Success in this position will be measured by the product outcomes and engagement impact with the Museum’s global audiences, and will include creation of digital online curriculum and in-gallery mobile and kiosk digital learning experiences. The position establishes the Museum’s reputation as a leader in museum-based digital learning and will create materials for primary and secondary school use, as well as create and manage with Museum curators and educators distance learning sessions for 21st century learning audience.

Digital Division Goals are:

  • To create universal access to the Museum’s collections and programs.
  • To broaden audience and prepare for next generation access to the Museum.
  • To serve as the central hub that connects and brands the digital resources, assets and thought leaders in American illustration art.
  • To expand the reach of Norman Rockwell Museum beyond Stockbridge and bring the power of an illustrated image to the world.
  • To educate next generations of learners to Norman Rockwell and illustration art.

*Primary responsibilities

  1. Create interactive online digital learning tools and translate the Museum’s education curricula into universally accessible interactive online learning experiences.
  2. Oversee the creation of immersive mobile and in-gallery experiences, and,
  3. Oversee the integration of the Museum’s multiple web platforms into cohesive, responsive and immersive design and globally branded platforms for the Museum.
  4. Develop the Museum’s mobile and App platforms.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • 3 – 5 years’ experience required in digital media and content management for the visual arts, museums, or cultural organizations; digital project management; or related field.
  • Understanding of next generation adaptation to mobile and digital engagement.
  • Strong communication skills and project management experience.
  • Basic understanding of the software development lifecycle, production best practices, quality assurance methodology, asset management, and project management techniques.
  • Experience working with content management systems (CMS).
  • Self-directed ability to produce multiple projects on time and work independently.
  • Engaged with new developments in multimedia solutions and technologies is ideal.
  • Strong computer skills, including web-based Project Management Software (Basecamp, DoneDone, etc.); Microsoft Office; Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator, basic HTML, basic JSON.
  • Knowledge of technical specs and requirements for various asset types, especially audio, video, and graphics.
  • Technical familiarity with APIs and comfort level in verifying data would be an asset.
  • Data management experience, including file naming conventions and archiving content is desirable.
  • Communication and organizational abilities are essential.
  • Energy, enthusiasm, and initiative are key qualities for this position.
  • Collaborative and diplomatic team player with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Keen attention to detail and creative problem-solving skills are necessary.
  • BA or BS or equivalent experience required.
  • Interest in and knowledge of art, popular culture and visual media preferred.

Norman Rockwell Museum holds the largest and most significant collection of art and archival materials relating to the life and work of Norman Rockwell. The Museum also preserves, interprets, and exhibits a growing collection of original illustration art by noted American illustrators, from historical to contemporary. The Norman Rockwell Museum Art Collection and Norman Rockwell Archive inspire a vibrant year-round exhibition program, national traveling exhibitions, and arts and humanities programs that engage diverse audiences. The Museum’s collections, which are made accessible worldwide, are a comprehensive resource relating to Norman Rockwell and the art of illustration, the role of published imagery in society, and the American twentieth century.

Dedication to a deepened understanding of the art of illustration has led to the formation of the Rockwell Center for American Visual Studies. The first of its kind in the nation, this research institute supports sustained scholarship and establishes the Norman Rockwell Museum’s leadership in the vanguard of preservation and interpretation relating to this important aspect of American visual culture.  Set on a picturesque 36-acre estate in the hometown of America’s favorite artist, the Norman Rockwell Museum is one of the crown jewels of the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts.
