The Position
As we transition into new location and work to become a truly community-centered museum, we seek a creative, dynamic Director of Digital Projects to plan and manage the digital experiences program, producing compelling projects that tell stories about the city of Charlotte and the region. The Director of Digital Projects will build and implement a bold, strategic digital projects plan that addresses the most pressing issues of our time in the context of local, regional, and national history by capitalizing on the unique storytelling capabilities of various digital mediums.

The Work
As a member of the Programs Department, the Director of Digital Projects will:

  • Collaborate with Museum leadership to develop near- and long-term direction for digital experiences that are informed by community collaboration, audience research, leverage the Museum’s relationships with Charlotte communities, and align with the Museum’s goals;
  • Oversee the development of the digital projects schedule that initially prioritizes future work on the KnowCLT project and content on the museum’s website and operates in concert with other programming areas;
  • Assemble teams of in-house and contract technical and content developers, researchers, writers, evaluators, community advisors, and graphic designers, and oversee the development of all digital projects, including concept, budget development, design, technical implementation, user testing, and maintenance;
  • Set experiential and learning goals for digital projects, develop evaluation plans, and assess project effectiveness;
  • Conduct history and community research to develop content for digital projects;
  • Work across departments to ensure all departments understand the goals and content of each digital project, and to maximize collaboration between digital projects, programs, fundraising, and marketing;
  • Maintain knowledge of current museum practice and standards for digital experience design and implementation;
  • Manage digital projects budgeting and reporting;
  • As part of a team, offer programs and community presentations about the histories and cultures of Charlotte and the region;
  • Participate in fund raising presentations, grant writing, and donor appreciation events as needed.


  • 3+ years of experience in planning, executing, and assessing collaborative digital storytelling projects for public audiences, including concept development, content development, storyboarding, and managing iterative technical development;
  • Knowledge of and experience with digital work in multiple formats (e.g., apps, mapping projects, data visualization, innovative digital exhibits);
  • A. or equivalent of education and experience in public history, US History, museum studies, or a related field and projects. Expertise in southern studies, North Carolina history, or Charlotte history highly desirable;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current best practices in digital public humanities work including rights and use, digital asset management, web accessibility, and basic principles of user-centered web design and information architecture;
  • Strong project management skills and the demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, budgets, and ongoing relationships;
  • Experience with community-centered projects, including community curation;
  • Experience effectively managing technical contractors, advisory, interns, or staff;
  • Strong research, writing, and speaking skills, including experience explaining technical concepts to non-technical audiences;
  • A deep understanding of, and commitment to, diversity and equity.
  • Capacity and willingness to support the organization beyond primary responsibilities, and to work evenings and weekends when required.
