Director of IT

The Director of Information Technology provides vision, leadership, and strategic direction for the use of digital technologies that supports the goals and mission of the museum. The Director of IT will lead the future development and deployment of technology across programs, audience experiences, and platforms including the website (, mobile, and onsite interactive media, and is responsible for business system support, core infrastructure, and information distribution technologies.   This position manages the Information Technology Manager and all consultants hired to assist with any IT updates, changes, support, etc.  This individual will oversee all technological systems for the museum and guarantee that these systems are up to date and competitive with the industry.  The Director of IT will be responsible for ensuring that all IT issues get resolved within a timely and efficient manner.


  • Seven to ten years’ experience with digital media and digital technologies.  Experience leading a technology team and IT department.
  • Degree in business administration, engineering, computer science or related field, preferably at the Masters level.
  • Demonstrated experience successfully leading, developing, and implementing digital strategy across organizations, ideally within the cultural, arts, or education sector.
  • Progressive and diversified experience in IT technology environments.
  • Experience developing digital products on the basis of user-centered research and of using data analytics to inform decisions as well as experience of successful digital development following iterative/agile principles.
  • Sound project management skills with regard to projects, budgets and personnel with a proven ability to collaborate across departments, leading teams with or without direct authority.
  • A deep understanding of current and emerging-technologies as well as a nuanced view of cultural and technical trends.
  • Extensive knowledge of Digital Asset Management solutions.
  • Experience with managing staff and handling outside consultants.
  • Must possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal, be well organized, and delegate effectively.
  • Must have good project management skills and a strong understanding of budgets.

Essential Functions:

  • Assess the museums current IT infrastructure, articulate an IT strategy for current and future growth, address inefficiencies and areas of improvement.
  • Review technological assets and identify developments in technologies, guiding ongoing investment in these technologies and effectively balancing budgets, risk and opportunities.
  • Work with senior stakeholders to develop a clear strategic framework for delivering vision and to provide strong direction to ensure digital output is fully aligned with strategic goals of the institution.
  • Oversee the IT needs for the museum’s three locations.
  • Provide visible and inspiring leadership, forming strong relationships across departments, and fostering increased digital literacy across the organization.
  • Oversee daily performance of museum’s databases, including MS Exchange 2007/2010, Gallery Systems TMS 2010, Blackbaud software, Net Exposure’s (Image Portal) Security System (Lennel), NCR Counterpoint pos, Follett library database Symantec Mail Security and Symantec Endpoint server.
  • Resolve server-based applications problems by working closely with vendors including Raisers Edge, FundWare, Patron’s Edge, Financial Edge, Counter Point, ADP and Symantec Mail Scan, Symantec Corporate Software, TMS Gallery Systems, Follett, and HBE Security software.
  • Stays abreast of trends and regulation to ensure effectiveness and compliance, and reduce costs when possible.
  • Review technological assets and identify developments in technologies, guiding ongoing investment in these technologies and effectively balancing budgets, risk, and opportunities.
  • Access the current methods of storing and archiving digital assets and develop a plan that helps the museum better safeguard these assets while also creating work efficiencies.
  • Spearhead funding proposals, clearly establishing how new technology will meet the needs of the museum and its patrons.
  • Prepare and oversee annual operating budgets for the IT department and guarantees that the department is on budget at the end of the fiscal year.
  • Periodically evaluates the technical skillsets needed to support project objectives and works with existing team resources, where possible, to develop and expand these skill sets.
  • Ensures that projects stay on task and get completed within the allotted time.  Safeguards that the execution of new/upgraded information systems are finished by their prearranged deadlines.
  • Manages the organization’s overall relationship with key technological partners and consultants.
