The Smithsonian Institution, National Air and Space Museum is hiring an Exhibition Designer. Working in the Exhibits Design Department, the position will design exhibitions and exhibition lighting at the National Air and Space Museum’s Washington, DC and Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center (Chantilly, VA) locations. The incumbent is also responsible for providing a variety of services in support of the overall planning, development, and execution of exhibitions for the Museum.
Duties:
- Prepares and presents design concepts, orally, with drawings, and in writing, that show overall conceptual design, translating verbal theme statements or outlines into two- or three-dimensional visual presentations.
- Establishes and coordinates the various elements of all visual products and lighting for museum exhibitions at the National Air and Space Museum’s National Mall and Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center locations.
- Writes and administers a wide variety of design contracts using Museum and Smithsonian approved procedures.
- Uses CAD design software, AutoCAD and Vectorworks, to create drawing packages and details for review by internal authorities and for use by fabrication shops
- Oversees production and installation of permanent and temporary exhibits in the Air and Space Museum’s major galleries and public spaces and at the Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center
- Develops, coordinates, and monitors the lighting design of exhibitions at both locations. Will take into account the varied lighting circumstances as well as the conservation guidelines for the preservation of the Museum’s one-of-a-kind artifacts which are comprised of every kind of material.
- Develops detailed architectural drawings, specifications, and construction documents for review by the Museum and other Smithsonian organizations.
