Interaction and Visual Designer — The Getty, Los Angeles

The Getty Center, Los AngelesWe’re seeking a highly creative, collaborative, energetic designer to lead web design at the J. Paul Getty Trust, one of the largest arts organizations in the world. The designer will be part of the Getty’s Web Group, a team of developers, project managers, and content developers who manage the infrastructure, content strategy, and design of the Getty’s website,, and who contribute to numerous related digital efforts across the Getty.

Reporting to the Head of Web and New Media Development in Getty Digital, the Interaction and Visual Designer will conceptualize digital presentations and deliver high-quality design solutions across a variety of media: web, mobile, tablets, and emerging technologies. We are seeking a candidate who can work effectively as part of cross-functional teams and who is comfortable dialoguing with and presenting to a variety of audiences, including scholars and senior personnel. The ideal candidate will be equally adept at visual design and interaction design and user-centered design methods, and will have some knowledge of art history, museums, and/or academic environments.

Major Job Responsibilities

– Plays a key role in developing the user experience for both web and mobile
– Collaborates with other internal experts including the brand manager and content strategists to evolve the look and feel of the Getty brand online, both on and across Getty-branded third-party sites such as social media
– Applies knowledge of design to assignments that range from the modest and/or straightforward, such as the preparation of web graphics, to the vast and highly complex—each solution tailored to suit form, behavior, and content constraints
– Gathers user requirements and translates them into innovative user interfaces for multiple devices/platforms, with interaction styles and modes that result in improved and measurable user productivity and engagement
– Works on multiple projects simultaneously and wears different hats throughout production process: leading UX efforts during the concept stage, iterating visual designs to suit changing requirements during development, conducting quality assurance on finished products, communicating best practices for maintenance
– Diplomatically gathers and integrates client feedback on designs, revised design prototypes, wireframes, and usage scenarios to illustrate evolving concepts
– Demonstrates awareness of the impact that design work may have on disparate projects, including an ability to communicate persuasively with others around points of conflict or difference
– Collaborates in multidisciplinary teams, utilizing consensus-building abilities
– Ensures our digital solutions interrelate with traditional forms of information delivery
– Works closely with development teams to understand concepts, requirements, and execute design solutions


– Bachelor’s degree in design or related field
– Seven or more years in designing for web and interactive media
– Proven record of leading and mentoring others
– A passion for the future of interactive media, particularly digital technology
– Excellent oral and written communication skills
– Demonstrated experience collaborating in a team environment
– Expertise in visual design using software tools like Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator)
– Expertise in visual design systems such as grids and typography for the web
– Prototyping skills using tools such as Axure, HTML5, Flash, Java, Flex, Dreamweaver
– Understanding of and familiarity with user research and the use of personas and scenarios to inform design decisions
– Experience creating wireframes and either clickable prototypes or interaction design specs
– Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities
– Working knowledge of standards-driven CSS, HTML and Javascript
– Professional experience communicating with, presenting to, and taking input from a variety of colleagues, including senior management
– A robust portfolio of UI/UX/Visual Design achievements
– Familiarity with mobile development, including responsive design and touch capabilities
– Extensive cross-browser and cross-device development experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

– Advanced skills in software application use in areas of graphic design, 3D design including: Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Bridge, Acrobat, FontExplorer, VectorWorks and SketchUp
– Advanced skills in business software including: Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
– Skilled with software for rich media production including: Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects and HTML
– Competent with FilemakerPro
– Proven knowledge of professional printing and construction methods, and familiarity with standard production materials and processes
– Proven skills in hand-sketching, drafting, model-making, and basic printing, laminating, and trimming
– Knowledge of industrial design and architectural practices, including life/safety and ADA regulations
– Proven knowledge of museum conservation needs and practices
– Proven ability to organize and plan projects from start to finish and communicates ideas to a group
– Proven ability to work on multiple projects, of different scope and complexity, at various stages of development, in a deadline-driven work environment
– Proven ability to apply best practices in design work
– Proven ability to create strategic plans and translate plans into actions
– Knowledge of art history
