Manager of IT Operations

The Corporation of the Fine Arts Museums is seeking a Manager of IT Operations. This position will manage the team responsible for network operations and system administration and will support the needs of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s (FAMSF) IT infrastructure. The position is responsible for the design, implementation, operations, maintenance, and support of the network, systems, cloud-based services as well as special projects relating to the overall IT infrastructure.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Defines overall IT Operations strategy and sets technical direction.
  2. Uses knowledge of IT standards to comply with regulatory requirements and to ensure the operations and security of all museum and offsite-supported IT services.
  3. Has an in-depth, advanced understanding of various network and server platforms and protocols and related technical standards critical to the operation of IT systems.
  4. Understands communications, systems and network needs of organization and provides support for them.
  5. Architects, designs, and implements all enterprise technologies including but not limited to remote-access, IP Telephony, SSO, monitoring, and backup.
  6. Leads team in assessing all infrastructure changes and improvements and to achieve strategic goals.
  7. Manages the team to resolve hardware, software, and architectural issues of IT operations systems.
  8. Takes lead role in testing and evaluation of new or enhanced IT operations services.
  9. Oversees and leads new development and deployment of IT operations management systems, tools, and tracking and monitoring systems for wired and wireless technology.
  10. Creates and implements LAN/WAN designs and network security architecture necessary to support and protect museum services and initiatives.
  11. Designs and implements wireless communications needs that meet the Museums’ evolving internal business communication needs.
  12. Manages, creates, and updates virtual machines as needed (both Windows and Linux).
  13. Manages, creates, and updates web services as needed.
  14. Works directly with vendor/manufacturer technical support to isolate and resolve hardware and software issues.
  15. Defines, architects and implements requirements for various organizational projects.
  16. Liaises among various department stakeholders for project and operation needs.
  17. Manages systems and network administrators in the day-to-day activities of the IT operations team.
  18. Mentors and trains IT Operations staff.
  19. Leads the Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity efforts: creates and maintains the process and documentation and leads exercises to test current plan and changes to plan.
  20. Leads cyber initiatives to implement monitoring and education to minimize impacts of cyber attacks and creates, implements and trains organization on cyber plan and response.
  21. Works with the institution on achieving and maintaining PCI compliance.
  22. Coordinates efforts on city compliance projects including city-required cyber initiatives.
  23. Collaborates with Help Desk, IT Applications, Data Services and Photo Services as needed.
  24. Collaborates with leadership, IT Help Desk and Applications team on standards and requirements for all equipment needs.
  25. Formulates and implements policies, procedures and standards in order to ensure maximum uptime and service quality.
  26. Ensures that documentation is created and updated.
  27. Maintains and defines budgetary needs for IT operations needs.
  28. Establishes, maintains, and negotiates vendor relationships.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Education: B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent from an accredited college or university.  Industry certifications such as CCNA, MCSE, CCISP are a plus.

Work Experience: 5-7 years of work experience in IT operations or a related technical field, including a minimum of 3 years of direct experience in the management and administration of server and network infrastructures. 1-2 years minimum experience with SAN, virtualization, and network routing and switching. 1 year minimum supervisory/management experience.

Substitution: Education may be substituted with six years of progressively responsible experience as an IT Systems and Network Engineer.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience with project management in a complex business environment.
  • Experience with defining standards, policies and creating workflows
  • In-depth knowledge and hands-on experience with MS Windows 2008, 2012 and 2016.
  • In-depth knowledge and hands-on experience with firewalls, routing, and switching.
  • Knowledge of network protocols including, but not limited to BGP, dynamic routing, EIGRP and LAN switching (layer 2, 3).
  • Experience with the use and implementation of enterprise monitoring systems.
  • Experience building and configuring the infrastructure to support and secure services such as web, email, database and other business critical systems.
  • Experience with Active Directory and Microsoft server architecture.
  • Experience with scripting languages, ASP, and SQL
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills on servers, storage, and network systems.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects as well as daily responsibilities with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to follow appropriate policies and procedures in addressing customer needs.
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve complex technical problems.
  • Ability to write clearly and effectively document technical problems and their solutions.
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks with high attention to detail.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and provide quick response to system problems.
