Manager of Teen and Tech Programs

New-York Historical Society, a preeminent educational and research institution, is home to both New York City’s oldest museum and to one of the nation’s most distinguished independent research libraries. N-YHS is dedicated to presenting exhibitions and public programs, and fostering research that reveals the dynamism of history and its influence on the world of today. Founded in 1804, the museum’s holdings cover four centuries of American history, and include one of the world’s greatest collections of books, manuscripts, graphic materials, historical artifacts, and American art documenting the history of the United States as seen through the prism of New York.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Manager of Teen and Tech Programs oversees a robust suite of teen programs that combine digital learning and history.  Included in this role is the facilitation of our Tech Scholars programs, in which high school girls learn to code in a supportive, all-girl environment.  Students learn and share under-told stories of women throughout history and code digital projects that make a difference in the world.  The Manager of Teen and Tech Programs also oversees the Tech Commons @ New-York Historical, a fully equipped digital learning lab and maker space that’s designed for teens, and home to all our teen programs.  Teen Programs in the Tech Commons provide the equipment, and the technological and career training that makes STEM and STEM-related careers interesting and accessible to high school students from underserved communities, especially girls.

Using their knowledge of programming, technology, and digital learning capabilities, the Manager of Teen and Tech Programs works closely with the Associate Director of Teen Programs to create, oversee, and lead programs for teens in the Tech Commons.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

Responsibilities for this position include but may not be limited to:

  • Work closely with the Associate Director of Teen Programs to develop, implement, and facilitate out-of-school-time programming for teens at the New-York Historical Society, creating tech-integrated learning opportunities that engage students in the hands-on study of history as well as STEM and digital learning.
  • Serve as program manager, curriculum writer, and lead facilitator of our girls’ coding programs (Tech Scholars), drop-in hours, and paid internships in the Tech Commons, and other programs as needed.
  • Manage virtual and in-person teen programming.
  • Supervise and manage educators as needed for programs.
  • Serve as manager of the Tech Commons to ensure its day-to-day proper functionality, scheduling and overseeing of drop-in hours. Ensure that all equipment in the Tech Commons is working and liaise with the IT department to maintain and update software and equipment in Tech Commons.
  • Create and maintain partnerships with the NYCDOE, DYCD, schools, community centers, media/technology companies, and universities to ensure wide access to programming for teens, and to deepen professional opportunities for young people.
  • Commit to Diversity, Equity, Accessibility and Inclusion in all aspects of audience engagement, recruitment, mentorship support, and curriculum development.
  • Actively contribute to fundraising efforts for all teen programs, collaborating with the Development department and contributing to grant proposals and reports.
  • Work closely with the Associate Director of Teen Programs to align Tech Commons programs with the Education department’s work, including School and Teacher programs.
  • Support the Education Department’s work with technology by leading staff trainings, assisting with technology-related questions, and advising and collaborating on technology projects.
  • Actively engage with and contribute to the youth development, STEM, and museum community through presentations and networking opportunities.
  • Provide administrative support for the teen programs team.
  • Contribute to marketing and outreach efforts for all teen programs, including print and electronic materials as well as attending recruiting and opportunities fairs at schools and community-based organizations.
  • Manage virtual and in-person teen programming.

REQUIREMENTS:

The Manager of Teen and Tech Programs has a strong background in working with teens, facility with an array of technological tools and/or software, and experience facilitating teen digital learning programs.

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, with a strong interest in youth development, technology, and history.
  • Minimum of three years of experience working with students and program management required, preferably with teens in an out-of-school-time educational setting.
  • Knowledge of HTML, CSS. Knowledge of additional programming languages, including JavaScript, a plus.
  • Experience and facility with media production software and hardware, as well as the ability to troubleshoot issues stemming from this technology.
  • Knowledge of and passion for history.
  • Excellent project management and communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Google Workspace.
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings as needed.

 

COMPENSATION:

$60,000 (Annual); The New-York Historical Society offers a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, and vision insurance, as well as retirement benefits.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee with or without accommodation, to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

This position will require the employee to lift (up to 25 lbs.), bend, stoop, walk, speak and stand for up to 8 hours in a day. Sedentary computer work is also required.
