The Wolfsonian–FIU seeks proposals to design, develop, and implement a new online digital collections platform and migrate existing records into the platform. The implementation will include developing automated processes to ingest the existing catalog and object records (high-resolution image and metadata) from both our library catalog and object managements systems. The existing systems are comprised of records on approximately 200k objects in the collection. Currently the storage size is approximately nine terabytes and growing at a rate of two terabytes per year.
The new platform should utilize the museum industry standard ISLE-based Islandora 8 open-source digital asset management system. It should fully utilize Islandora 8 features including full-text search, zoom capabilities for high-resolution images, OAI feed for metadata harvesting, and allow for 3D scans, page turning pdfs, and multimedia in its object records. The aim of the new system is to provide greater control and flexibility over our current external facing systems, Proficio for the Web (http://objects.wolfsonian.org), and Sobek (https://digital.wolfsonian.org).
The museum’s collections include both library and museum objects that are cataloged and managed using multiple platforms, namely SirsiDynix EOS.web and Rediscovery Proficio. A successful implementation requires extensive knowledge of underlying metadata structures, irregular database field conventions, and other platform specific knowledge so that data can be normalized for its eventual ingestion into Islandora’s asset management system using an automated process. The vendor should demonstrate extensive working knowledge with these two platforms as the successful migration of our existing records is of paramount importance.
The vendor must implement two installations of ISLE-based Islandora (staging and production), provide customized theme installation and content modeling, mass ingest support and management, training and documentation in administration and operation, and end-to-end project management. The successful vendor should have prior working knowledge with Islandora installations of similar size and complexity in major museums. Vendor should be able to provide adequate references if asked during the evaluation period. Experience with university teaching museums is desired but not required.
All custom software developed must be released freely and publicly under GNU General Public License version 2.0. We anticipate the project should be completed in 4 to 6 months. Price is a criteria that will be considered, and the award will be based on the best value based on all the criteria desired. Please include expected hours and hourly rates in your proposal.
