The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco is seeking a Systems Administrator. As a Systems Administrator you own and support the server infrastructure systems. You’re highly technical and work directly with other members of the Information Technology team to ensure reliability and sustainability all Museums’ service infrastructure as well as compliance with internal policies. Success in this role means you are able to support servers in a mixed operating system environment and work efficiently with other Technology and Innovation operations groups. You are expected to provide substantive input when it comes to systems design decisions that have an impact on keeping the museum productive.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Plan, build, document and maintain IT infrastructure
  2. Install and configure servers, computer and/or telecommunications hardware, and software; service and maintain equipment.
  3. Design, code, debug, maintain, and document programs and procedures used to enhance existing services.
  4. Design, develop and implement computer applications for user departments.
  5. Provide technical assistance to users; escalate and coordinate problem resolution activities; consult on feasibility, costs, and benefits of additions or enhancements; perform help-desk functions.
  6. Administer remote logons system securities, data transfers, and remote activities.
  7. Retrieve and download and/or upload data; assist with the transition of data/operations between systems.
  8. Research, analyze, and test application or system software for compatibility and capability to specific job applications and assignments; recommend hardware and software purchases.
  9. Maintain system backups and control records; assist in the maintenance of files and libraries; create logical directory structure; may be responsible for retention and storage of databases.
  10. Coordinate and schedule hardware repairs; perform routine equipment maintenance, repairs and modifications on various computer systems and related equipment; create user groups and individual accounts.
  11. Perform and monitor scheduled job executions, including system and application backups and archiving tasks, on multiple platforms.
  12. Perform work related to security and disaster recovery needs such as system backup and/or restoration, traveling to hot site or recovery site, and operating restored systems.
  13. Lead design, development, testing, end-user training, and deployment of systems.
  14. Provide high quality customer service to all Museums’ staff regarding technology issues.
  15. Ensure the confidentiality, accessibility, and reliability of all electronic data and information.
  16. Analyze business practices of departments and make recommendations for improving work flow efficiency.
  17. Oversee and efficiently utilize all technology resources and vendors including, but not limited to, servers and equipment, desktop computers, applications and databases, Internet services, telecommunications services and equipment, and cellular services and equipment, with the underlying goal of ensuring quality and serving the needs of the agency at the highest level possible.
  18. Build and improve the technology resources available to staff.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Education:  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university preferably in computer science, information systems, or a closely related field.

Work Experience:  Five to seven years of experience that demonstrates the knowledge and ability to assume system administration and/or computer/network operations responsibilities.

Substitution: May substitute one year of experience for every 30 college units.  There is no substitution for the five (5) years of experience.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Systems architecture, security design and implementation, monitoring, troubleshooting, hardware configuration, and performance tuning.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server 2003/2008/2008R2/2012/2012R2, 2016 and Ubuntu Linux: installation, administration, maintenance, and backup and recovery, Veeam experience desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge Microsoft Active Directory Services, MS SQL, MySQL, G Suite, and VMWare.
  • Ability to maintain an unbiased stance to hardware and software in order to provide best fit solutions.
  • Knowledge of Linux, Windows and OS X operating systems.
  • Knowledge of LAN/WAN/WiFi network technology, topology and terminology, DNS, DHCP, NTP, SNMP, and Network Monitoring Software.
  • Experience with Cisco Unified Messenger / VOIP.
  • Experience with Mimecast.
  • Knowledge of training techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to use logic and analysis to solve computer and systems problems.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to apply new technologies and system changes.
  • Ability to analyze and categorize data and information in order to determine the relationship of the data with reference to established criteria/standards.
  • Ability to advise and provide interpretation to others on how to apply policies, procedures, and standards to specific situations.
  • Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness, and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable criteria.
  • Ability to read and understand professional journals and literature.
  • Ability to prioritize competing requests for service.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sufficient strength and coordination for lifting, pushing, pulling, and/or carrying the weight of computer equipment (approximately 25 lbs).
  • Requires bending, stooping, and/or crawling in order to install or repair computer or printer cables.
  • Requires hand/eye coordination for semi-skilled movements, such as taking apart casings, installing parts, reconnecting computers, and data entry.
  • Requires rotational and shift assignment as well as travel to and work at both the de Young and Legion of Honor.
