Position Overview:

Digital Marketing Manager

The New Museum seeks a Digital Marketing Manager who will be a key contributor to the New Museum’s digital marketing, communications, and content strategies. This role is responsible for the implementation and tracking of website updates, digital and email marketing campaigns, collaborating on social media strategy and execution, and building awareness for the New Museum’s exhibitions, programming, and partnerships through robust content production and distribution across digital platforms. An experienced project manager, the Digital Marketing Manager is an integral member of the Marketing and Communications team and reports to the Associate Director of Marketing and Digital Strategy. This is a union-represented position subject to terms of the Museum’s agreement with Local 2110, UAW, and is eligible for the New Museum’s employee benefits programs. Starting salary begins at $61, 800 commensurate with experience. 


Maintain and steward

  • Oversee web production, including content strategy and production, feature set development, analytics, and platform evaluation
  • Work with other Museum departments to update content (event pages, exhibition pages, visit page, membership page, etc.) in a timely manner, and in conjunction with institutional messaging
  • Update media on the exhibition pages as it becomes available (including installation photos, press releases, audio guides, video, social media content, etc.), including migrating past exhibitions to the New Museum Digital Archive on a quarterly basis
  • Work closely with affiliated organizations (Rhizome, NEW INC, IdeasCity) to ensure a consistent and symbiotic digital presence
  • Under the guidance of the Associate Director of Marketing and Digital Strategy, serve as point-person for designated digital and marketing projects, including liaising with internal stakeholders, and external vendors and partners to develop timelines and ensure deadlines are met
  • Manage and track analytics across digital platforms and implement data-driven decisions to improve and evolve the New Museum’s content, marketing, and digital strategies

Manage email marketing content and strategy

  • Oversee the Museum’s email marketing program, ensuring consistent quality, formatting, tone, and voice, and maintaining lists and segments
  • Develop and manage institutional email calendar and timelines for all email communications (newsletters, invitations, etc.), ensuring campaigns are created and deployed on schedule
  • Work with Associate Director of Marketing and Digital Strategy to determine content for bimonthly e-newsletters; design, route, test, and deploy
  • Supervise design of email communications by Development, Education, and Retail departments, offering guidance and ensuring consistent formatting, quality, and tone and voice
  • Train and grant appropriate access to content creators across departments where appropriate
  • Monitor statistics and share campaign reports; make data-driven recommendations for improving email strategies and ensuring successful campaigns
  • Strategize and implement ideas for email acquisition online and on-site
  • Create new email templates as necessary

Project Management

  • Design and implement new workflows for multi-departmental procedures across the museum
  • Coordinate a variety of small to large special projects and initiatives, facilitating communication among multiple cross-functional collaborators and establishing and enforcing timelines and deliverables
  • Be a key stakeholder contact, clarifying strategic requirements, clearly translating complex ideas into concrete solutions, and managing diverse organizational expectations
  • In consultation with Associate Director of Marketing and Digital Strategy, manage work of outside vendors and contractors on the New Museum website and other digital projects, including the forthcoming redesign of
  • Establish, document, and enforce production standards, and ensure that the New Museum’s digital products conform to consistently high production values and provide elegant user experiences

Additional responsibilities

  • Follow new technologies and proactively ensure that the New Museum strives for industry best practices with regards to digital experiences through monitoring of activities in the digital cultural space both nationally and internationally
  • Collaborate on the creation of engaging content for an array of digital communications, including website, email, and social media
  • Manage the institution’s YouTube and Vimeo accounts, uploading video as needed
  • Update digital signage in lobby on an ongoing basis




  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in digital marketing or related field
  • Strong knowledge of Mailchimp, familiarity with the API and 3rd party integrations
  • Experience with Google Analytics
  • Experience working with the latest web and mobile production standards and practices, social media tools and platforms a plus
  • Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office
  • Fluency in HTML and CSS, with a working knowledge of PHP
  • Demonstrated experience managing the development of marketing campaigns, digital products, technologies, and experiences
  • Knowledge of Terminal and SSH, Git and GitHub
  • Exceptional organizational skills and a keen eye for design and detail
  • Experience with project management tools (Asana a plus)
  • The ability to prioritize and manage requests from various stakeholders
  • The ability to juggle multiple projects on deadline, work under pressure, and take initiative
  • Humor, kindness, empathy, and the ability to accept and manage feedback
  • Excellent writing and proofreading skills
  • A proficiency with internet culture and close familiarity with the tools and the landscape of the digital world


  • Ability to design and implement user testing scenarios
  • Knowledge of Amazon AWS, particularly CloudFront and S3
  • Knowledge of best practices for digital preservation
  • Video production and editing experience (Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere)
  • Interest in contemporary art and museums
  • Experience working at a non-profit or arts
