Job Summary

Reporting into the Web and New Media Development team in the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Web Content Strategist provides content support for the Getty’s website and assists in the development of engaging online experiences across Getty.edu, apps, blog, and social media.

The web content strategist works in a collaborative environment with software engineers, designers, and producers as well as content stakeholders from departments across the Getty to play a key role in the entire content lifecycle:

  • identifying goals and audience;
  • organizing complex information;
  • suggesting workflows and roles;
  • developing standards and guidelines; and
  • maintaining, auditing, and retiring content.

The content strategist should be adept at writing for a variety of audiences and channels; editing and rewriting text and headlines to make them engaging; prototyping and wireframing; crafting metadata and optimizing for search and social media sharing; creating and editing digital media elements such as images and video; and developing content for apps and responsive design (including knowing when to recommend one over the other).

The ideal candidate will be one third writer/editor, one third digital media specialist, and one third technologist, with exceptionally strong writing and editing skills (Chicago and AP); competence in creating, sourcing, and manipulating digital media, particularly still images (Adobe CC); and technical skills including at least basic HTML/CSS and familiarity with content management systems (Interwoven Teamsite, WordPress, Drupal).

Major Job Responsibilities
  • Content lead on web projects: Serve as content resource for projects of varying complexity, from rewriting single webpages through writing content for apps, re-architecting web sections, and developing standalone websites.
  • Content development and line editorial for the Getty’s blog, The Iris: Work with the manager for digital engagement to identify story angles; write, rewrite, edit, proof, and format copy, captions, images, rich media, and metadata for maximum readership; and ready posts for publishing in WordPress.
  • Web Updates: Anticipate, schedule, and perform needed updates to the Getty360 app and to Getty.edu, with a focus on the /visit/ and /about/ sections.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably related to digital media production or journalism.
  • 5+ years’ experience in digital content production.
  • Subject area knowledge in the visual arts.
  • Knowledge of copyright law as it applies to digital content.
  • Expert blogging skills.
  • Experience working with experts in the humanities who may have limited technical knowledge.
  • Ability to multitask productively, manage competing priorities, and adhere to project deadlines.
  • Tact, diplomacy, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to proactively develop positive relationships across a large organization.

  • Must be able to respond to fast paced web environment to evolving conversations online
  • Must be proficient in media creation and production tools
  • Ability to edit and/or write for different types of audiences as well as for different types of distribution channels
