Alexander von Lünen is currently as Research Associate at Loughborough University (UK). He holds a degree in computer science and a doctorate in history, both from the Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany.

From 2007 to 2012 he was technical lead for the Great Britain Historical GIS and its website "A Vision of Britain through Time", working as a Research Fellow in the geography department of the University of Portsmouth. From 2012 to 2013 he was a Research Fellow at the Photographic History Research Centre at De Montfort University in Leicester. Before venturing into academia he worked as industrial software developer.

Alexander’s principal research interests are Digital Humanities, Historical Geography, History of Science and Technology, and Philosophy of Technology. In 2006 he was "Scholar-In-Residence" at the Deutsche Museum, Munich, Germany for six months.rn
